Educational Objectives


Description
Students complete courses in the 5 core areas of public health. The courses can be taken not-for-credit or for-credit. Depending on the selection of courses chosen, the total credit number will range between a minimum of 22 and a maximum of 26.

Objectives
Upon completion of the training certificate the individual will be able to:
- Use appropriate statistical methods for critical reading of reports of statistical analysis of public health problems;

- Apply the basic concepts of epidemiology to the study of the patterns of disease and injury applied to public health;

- Determine the role of environmental factors affecting the health of a population;

- Identify the managerial and policy issues associated with the delivery, quality and costs of health care;

- Identify the social, behavioral, and cultural factors related to population health.

Intended Audience
- Members of the public health workforce seeking formal education and training in the five core areas of public health. The program is intended to be taken on a part-time basis. The certificate can be completed by taking all courses online or a combination of online and onsite.

- Individuals interested in the Master of Public Health or another degree program in the School following completion of the certificate for-credit may be able to apply the course credits upon application and admission to the degree program.

- Individuals who are matriculated in a degree program in the School are not eligible for this training certificate.

Admissions Criteria
- Bachelor's degree with at least one college level biology course and one college level math or statistics course completed with a grade of B or above; a strong overall record of successful academic performance.

- No more than 8 credits may be accrued as a special student limited before submission of an application to the certificate program, complete with all supporting documents. Students applying for non-credit must submit an application and be admitted before enrolling in any courses. Students admitted to the training certificate program must begin the program within one year of admission unless granted a deferral.

- Students are strongly encouraged to complete the courses in epidemiology and biostatistics prior to taking courses in the remaining three core areas.

Requirements for Successful Completion
- Successful completion of all courses with a GPA of 2.75 or above whether registered not-for–credit or for-credit. In addition, all students must complete the online Introduction to Academic Ethics module within the first two terms of enrollment.

- The Training Certificate must be completed within two years of entry to the program.
