Cancer Prevention in African-American Young Adults

Back to United States project list

The primary objective of this research is to prevent the burden of cancer-related disease in a high-risk, vulnerable inner city African American young adult population by developing culturally appropriate intervention strategies to eliminate tobacco use in 18-24 year old urban, inner city, African-Americans. Specific aims are to:

  • examine the individual, social and environmental factors associated with the trajectories of smoking (initiation of smoking and continuation of tobacco use)
  • investigate the role of tobacco industry marketing and promotional strategies on young adults’ decision-making regarding tobacco use;
  • examine intervention strategies as to their feasibility and cultural appropriateness in the context of the employment, training and education programs as well as the community.
