Caption: Western Kenyans collect drinking water from the same shallow ponds they share with their livestock. The water is extremely polluted, and this is a leading cause of death in children. The Society for Women and AIDS in Kenya (SWAK) have begun to address this issue by using a microfinance system to sell a low-cost drinking water technology that cleans the water, making it safe to drink.

Caption: A young girl in Pitati, a village outside Purulia City, West Bengal, peers into the camera in curiosity. Sadly, her eyesight is at risk due to a vitamin A deficiency related to a lack of fruits and vegetables. This condition, which the villagers term "night blindness," inhibits vision in reduced light. With an improved water supply, more garden crops could be grown to provide a greater amount of nutrients that would promote the overall health of this child and others like her.
