Sommer Scholars

I have fought like a warrior, battling on the front lines of the health care system to improve the standard of care for partially sighted people here in the U.S. and abroad.

Whether he's managing his vision rehabilitation and geriatric ophthalmology practices in San Francisco, repairing microscopes at an eye clinic in India during a teaching mission, or suturing a lacerated forehead at an outdoor rock music festival, Daniel ("Dr. Danny") Schainholz is a resourceful innovator.

His primary goal is to improve the standard of vision care for elders through evidence-based research. At the Bloomberg School, he plans to document how conservative interventions he has utilized in private practice can reduce the rates of falls and fractures among frail elders, as well as lower their risk of premature institutionalization and depression, and slow dementia progression. "These novel approaches," he says, "are fertile avenues for study that could have both profound economic and critical policy implications."

"I hope to help create a world where we all can grow older more gracefully."
